Papilionaceous – The Start Bay Silk Weavers

Papilionaceous moved to the beautiful Start Bay area of South Devon in February 2001.
The wide open spaces, the ever changing sea and the relaxed pace of life all seem to complement the very detailed discipline of silk weaving.

“Papilionaceous” is an interesting name choice for a business with its etymology meaning “butterfly.” Why did you choose that name for your business?

Ten years ago in 1998 the first Papilionaceous silk bookmarks were produced; it was also the centenary of the death of Aubrey Beardsley. In addition, tonight (21st) sees the opening of a new production of Salome by Richard Strauss at Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

In recognition of all of the above the first of this year’s new bookmark releases features three images by Beardsley including two from his illustrations for Oscar Wilde’s Salome.

Welcome to the new Papilionaceous website.
What’s new? The silk bookmark section has been greatly enlarged due to public demand (or rather public who asked nicely). It now features all of the designs currently available including the Simon Drew collection of silk bookmarks.
New products such as the panel below will continue to appear over the next few weeks.
For our trade customers the design archive is available to view in the trimmings section.
As we are still in the process of building the site if there’s something you would like us to feature that isn’t here yet – do get in touch.
